GeMS in the Enterprise
ASM GeMS has been designed and built from the ground up
as an 'enterprise class' distributed application.
It has been engineered to be lightweight and network
friendly to allow for improved reliability and scalability
without need for an expensive, high speed network infrastructure.
GeMS offers two modes of operation: Client/Server and
Terminal Services.
In a Client/Server configuration each user runs the
GeMS front-end application from their Windows desktop.
In a Terminal Services configuration the GeMS front-end
application is hosted on a central 'application server'
that is accessed over the network using a 'Remote Desktop'
connection. The workstation acts as a 'dumb terminal'
to a session on the server. This requires a more powerful
server but can make administration easier in large environments.
These two modes are not mutually exclusive. It is common
for a combination of both modes to be used simultaneously.
Switching between the two modes is seamless and requires
no additional configuration.
A single GeMS server machine is usually sufficient
to run up to 40 concurrent users.
This means no additional data servers, no additional
print servers and no additional communications servers
are required.
The GeMS 'all on one machine' design radically reduces
your total cost of ownership, especially when you consider
that the cost of running a server is not just the machine
itself but also the cost of data back-up, uninterruptible
power supplies (UPS), maintenance contracts and of course
space in your server room. Having only a single machine
to look after also simplifies systems management.
GeMS does not have excessive hardware requirements.
With less that 10gb disk space required for a server
installation and less that 2gb for a workstation, GeMS
doesn't make huge demands for disk space or require
special disk hardware. It's lightweight network design
means it will run efficiently over any standard (100baseT)
office network.
GeMS doesn't require the purchase of additional, expensive
high speed 'gigabit' network cards or switches either.
Low network bandwidth requirements also make it ideal
for WAN (wide area network) and remote working. Many
GeMS users routinely work from home using VPN or dial-up
technology. GeMS runs on all versions of Microsoft Windows
(except for Windows 95).
GeMS supports up to 40 concurrent users on a single
server but it scales effectively as your requirement
grows. In a Terminal Services configuration it is possible
to seamlessly add additional application servers to
meet increased demand. For truly large enterprises GeMS
will scale very effectively to a 64bit environment.
These factors, combined with ASM's unrivalled 24x7
free support, mean ASM GeMS provides you with the most
robust, manageable and complete software solution for
running your freight business.
