On 1 January 2021 the transition period with the European Union (EU) ended and the United Kingdom (UK) now operates a full, external border.
This means that controls are placed on the movement of goods between Great Britain (GB) and the EU.
For exports to the EU, all of these controls began immediately on 1st January 2021.
For imports, the UK Government has taken the decision to introduce the new border controls in three stages up until 1 January 2022.
The Border Operating Model (BOM) outlines the processes for moving goods between GB and the EU from 1 January 2021 onwards, including processes to be introduced in April 2021 and January 2022.
